Mallalieus Limited

Textile Mill

Based in Delph, a charming village on the border of Yorkshire and Lancashire, Mallalieus draws on the centuries-old tradition of British textile manufacturing. Independent, family-owned and fully vertical, the mill specialises in working closely with clients to develop superb woollen cloths for apparel and interiors, plus fine woollen accessories such as scarves and throws.

Mallalieus is a totally vertical woollen manufacturing operation from receipt of wool fibre; we then dye, blend, card and spin yarn which we then use to weave and finish our fabrics and accessories. History dating back to 1863.

What is so amazing about working with British wool? We are proud of our “Made in Britain” story and sustainability is a key factor in our success. Our customers are now becoming more and more aware about traceability of raw material etc. As a consequence, British wool is an integral part of our collections across many end uses, including apparel, furnishings & accessories.

If any/ what have been your challenges with working with British wool and a local way of working? No challenges, with using British wool working very well in terms of sourcing and lead-times.

What weaving looms do you use and how many do you have? 16 dorner looms

Do you finish onsite? If not, is it convenient or what would be your ideal situation? Yes, finishing is done on site.

Do you find a lot of push back in the industry in terms of working with British wool? No, our clients are very much aware on the nature of British wool.

On a scale of 1- 10 (1 being the lowest and 10 excellent) how much do you think your business has improved in the below areas as a result of good working practices and environmental standards?

Waste Production - 10 (off-cuts, production)

Plastic Pollution - 10 (packaging)

Water Waste - 10 (dyeing and finishing)

Energy Consumption - 10 (shipping, machinery etc)

Do you find that customers are becoming more interested in British wool? Yes, we feel that the “story” on our products is every bit as important as the fabric itself.

Do you have any hero farmers or people in your supply chain you would like to highlight? Maria Benjamin at Dodgson Wood has been instrumental in providing a link between the Lake District Farmers and us as woollen fabric manufacturers. The story of fleece to finished product in such a small area of the UK is wonderful and such a key aspect of our company signature.
